There is almost nothing better than a Whiskey Smash to end your day. It’s just one of the best drinks in the world next to a well-executed Whiskey Sours. A Smash is one of those old classics included in the 1862 guide to mixing drinks that sits on the side of my desk.

When making the first Overwatch menu, I was also playing it heavily. Mei was, and still is, pure evil. So I just had to do a drink based on her. I wanted it to be minty, but mint and AFK have a sorted history. Enter a solution: Cold Spell Whiskey! A Mint Whiskey from 2015ish that tried to fall into the flavored whiskey shot market that Fireball was rampaging. The fact that it was a Mint Whiskey named Cold Spell was handy in lots of cocktails. The problem was, the drink was brownish-yellow. After many back and forths, we just ended up adding a little food coloring to make it blue.

Mei’s Endothermic Smash (Hurricane)

  • 1 1/2 oz Cold Spell Mint Whiskey
  • 2 oz Simple Syrup
  • Three lemon wedges
  • Soda Water fill
  • Blue Food Coloring

In a separate glass, muddle the three lemons, add ice, the whiskey, simple syrup, and one small drop of blue food coloring. Shake with your shaker till frost shows on the metal. Then pour the drink without straining into the Hurricane. Fill with Soda Water and serve.

This drink stuck around on the menu for a few years, but eventually, sales fell, and it went away. However, the cocktail has always been one of my wife’s favorite. She was a huge fan of Cold Spell Whiskey, and I’m sorry to say that it seems Cold Spell Whiskey has gone the way of so many things this year. There are still some bottles in stock when I’m writing this, but I assume it won’t be coming back once those are gone. So we have a different version we make at home.

Mei’s Endothermic Smash Home Version (Pint Glass /w ice)

  • 2 1/2 oz Bourbon
  • 1  oz Simple Syrup
  • 6-11 mint leaves
  • Four lemon wedges
  • Topo Chico Fill

In the Pint Glass before you put in ice, muddle mint and lemon wedges. Add ice, then pour the simple syrup over the ice, followed by the bourbon.  Flip the drink in a shaker (just one or two shakes to mix it) pour the content back into the Pint Glass. Fill with Topo Chico.
