The new season of the Expanse starts on December 16th, and I could no be more excited! I’m a massive fan of the books, and AFK had two Expanse theme nights and an Expanse section on the menu just because of that. I’ve been bouncing around these ideas for a couple of weeks, and I finally took the time to experiment with them on Thursday.

The first one is a re-work of one of the best-selling drinks off the Expanse theme menu and the Expanse section of the main menu—the Mariner Valley.

Mariner Valley #2 (Hurrican /w ice)

  • 1 1/2 oz Mezcal
  • 1/2 oz Saffron Simple Syrup
  • Fill Orange Juice
  • 1/2 Grenadine
  • 1 oz Carrot Juice

Before you put the ice in on this drink, pour in the Saffron Simple Syrup, this will make a cleaner visual line for the colors. Then add the splash of carrot Juice, after that the Mezcal, then fill with Orange Juice. Lastly, you’ll want to pour the Grenadine down the side of the glass to give it a little more of a color gradation. If you don’t care about presentation, pour them all into a shaker haphazardly, then shake & strain it into a glass (no one will judge you.)

If you’re a fan of the IP then you know Holden loves his coffee. I wanted to do an excellent hot mixed coffee drink to honor the Roci. I messed with some ideas on the original menu, but it never panned out.

The Roci (Mug)

  • 1 1/2 oz Grind Expresso Liqueur
  • Oregon Chai Tea Mix
  • Milk (or milk substitute, I used Goats Milk)

This drink can be hot or cold, depending on your liking. I had mine hot, so I followed the instructions on the Oregon Chai Tea mix for a hot Chai tea, then added the Grind and some Goat’s Milk to taste. If you’re going to want it cold, use a Liquid Chai Tea concentrate to make it easy on yourself.

If you can’t find Grind, you can substitute Kapalli Coffee Liqueur just fine. However, Grind is genuinely one of the best coffee Liqueurs I’ve ever had, and I suggest it highly.

I’ll be coming out with more Expanse drinks as the show runs for this season, I’m sure!
