This is part of our ongoing series “Epic Games: Buying Our Love”
Do you remember city builders such as Sim City fondly? Did you grow in despair seeing what Electronic Arts did to the Maxis brand? If you have not played this game, Cities: Skylines is for you! Today December 17, 2020 Epic Games tries to buy you love by offering you it for free as part of the Holiday 14 free games.
If you played Sim City you are familiar with the mechanics of this game. You navigate the demands of various factors, to construct your vision of a city. While Sim City turned into hot trash, this game series saw the opportunity and built on the model and improved it. The graphics of the game are fresh with great lighting effects. Traffic models are compelling and difficult get right, which if you ask any city planners that is the truth of the matters. The game supports building of above and underground at differing levels, so you can make complex transportation infrastructure. Additionally the road system allows you to custom make your own interchanges to the needs of your city.
The biggest downfall of this game is that it is on the Epic Games launcher rather than Steam. This launcher only supports modding on a Beta basis for limited games. The actual game limits your buildable area to only 9 areas, while you can find mods on steam that increases that to the total map area of 81 areas. Nine times more build area lends to creating more organic looking cities. This is not to mention all the modder created content and fixes for the game.
I would recommend you download this game and enjoy it. However, you should save up and buy it on Steam for the mod support only. Free is great but moddable is better.
