Jenever is the ancestor to the gin we all think of when we imbibe this type of alcohol. A distilled malt wine that was flavored by juniper berries was being made in the Netherlands in the 1500s. During the CDutch War of Independence, English forces aided their Protestant allies against the Spanish. This intermixing of two peoples plus embargoes of French alcohols lead to the English adopting this spirit. Farthing redevelopment and the invention of better distilling technologies lead to the London Dry Gin that we are familiar with. Hofland is a 98-year-old distillery that has been crafting and aging various styles of jenever and gin.
Aromatically, the Jenever is much more complex than the gin’s aroma. The alcohol aroma is subdued in this spirit. It does have a distinct smell of the malt wine that was used in the creation of the jenever. However, the botanicals only a small fraction of the aroma and are too diluted to identify the ingredients themselves.
At 40% alcohol by volume, this jenever is easy to drink. With this low ABV, you would expect to experience a subdued alcohol flavor but it is pronounced in the spirit. The wine flavor is pronounced as well with the juniper, and fruit flavors taking a reduced role. Overall it is a complex flavor that is interesting.
Would I recommend it? If you are bored of the usual selection of gin or looking to expand your flavor profile, you should try this style out. However, I do not think that this is a specifically great example of the jenever so may I recommend that you find more refined jenever if you are feeling adventurous.
To experience this alcohol I have crafted some cocktails named after some Futurama memes.
